PROJECT #1: Re-Visualizing Umass

Explore Umass Boston, in depth, with a journal or sketchbook. Find a space that needs attention. Spend 1 - 2 hours observing this space and how people interact with it. Write down your observations. Digitize sketches or photographs of this space. Really observe—for example you could make texture rubbings that you scan into the computer, pick up found objects from the space, examine dust patterns, jot down passing conversations. Imagine an art piece that could occupy that space. You will make two finished files for print.

file/print #1: Your art piece (or series of pieces if applicable) on it's own.

file/print #2: Your art piece placed digitally into the actual space you observed

Presentation: 2 color prints, flush mounted onto board
typed 1 paragraph artist statement

Grading Criteria:
Process: time spent at site, journal/sketches, discussion in class about observations
Visual Presentation: Photoshop techniques, attention to composition - balance, contrast, color, lighting.
Creative Concept - originality, response to site

PROJECT #2: Digital Transformation Series

Map out your daily paths for 3 days—what spaces do you cross? What communities do you interact with? As an artist, is there some way you could alter people’s ideas about the places in your community? Would it be a contemplative piece? Could you highlight aspects of motion, light, color or sound? Could you bring something from the history of the place to the present? Could you focus on sociopolitical issues of that place? Who could you interview about the place? Where could you research? Design an art piece for the space that can be represented as a series of 3 images with a 4th showing the space before virtually including your finished series.

Presentation: 4 color prints, flush mounted to board, typed 2 paragraph artist statement, budget & technical specifications page.

Grading Criteria:
Process: time spent at site, journal/sketches, research efforts—both with people & written materials/libraries.
Visual Presentation: Photoshop techniques, attention to composition - balance, contrast, color, lighting. Creative Concept - Consideration of audience impact & how piece affects/responds to surroundings.

PROJECT #3: Online Art Project

Digital art has a history of long distance, participatory art projects. Participate in an online art project - document this experience even if your participation is not published online. How does that experience compare to say, showing your work in the school gallery or directly to friends?

Presentation: Oral presentation to class showing results or documentation of process - includes emails/images that you sent to the art site.

Grading Criteria:
Effort/Follow through - documenting the process - save all written communications & images.

PROJECT #4: Virtual Art: Web Sites

Create an artist web site based on the Re-Visualizing Umass and/or Digital Transformation series. You may incorporate other personal art work into your site. You can expand upon a detail from either of the first two projects or present each in their entirety. Think about how the digital medium could alter some of the ideas presented in the two dimensional pieces. Could you set up a way to incorporate audience response into your site?

Presentation:
Live site uploaded to school server
Wireframe of site
5 html pages (minimum) which include images & text
Flash/director element required for those who already are familiar with Dreamweaver/html, optional for others
contact/email link
Postcard design that fits US postal service guidelines announcing the URL in a thought-provoking, artistic manner printed and mounted on board

Grading Criteria:
Process: organization of materials, written wireframe before starting production
Visual Presentation: how choices of colors, type, images reinforce ideas
Technique:.All parts function together effectively, works on Mac & PC.
Creative Concept - Originality of ideas, something that reflects your unique approach to the world & these projects

PROJECT #5: Artist Report

Brief presentation on a digital artist of your choice. Go online and find an interesting artist who works primarily with digital technologies. Feel free to email them and tell them they are your homework. Discuss the aspects of their work you like best and what you think could be improved.

Presentation:
5 minute verbal presentation to the class with visual examples of your artist.
1 - 2 page typed report about your artist.

Grading Criteria:
Clarity of information, enthusiasm for artist, organized presentations
